ABOUT CLAY LYON

Clay Lyon is owner and operator of Lyon Construction+Design, a residential remodeling company he founded in 2002. He began his home remodeling and construction career in 1987. His professional experience includes work in asbestos abatement, real estate development, custom wood furniture-making and residential energy conservation. He formed his first residential remodeling company in Portland, Oregon where he specialized in homes rich in age and character.

Born with the aptitude and curiosity of a scientist and the soul of a poet, Lyon is particularly drawn to restoring older, larger homes. ”I love old homes––the proportion, the wide double-hung windows, the lines, the trim, the plaster walls,” says Lyon. “They feel like family and home.” He traces his affinity toward older homes to a visit to his grandmother’s home in Indianapolis at age five. “It was a one-and-a-half story bungalow built in 1905,” says Lyon. “I felt a spiritual connection to the home–it went beyond family. It just felt different and good.”

Lyon’s business philosophy values relationship as a top priority. To illustrate its importance to him, he cites a client who had raised her family in a beautiful home and wanted to update it to fit her current needs. “I got the warmest feelings talking with her about her home and her life,” says Lyon. “Then finding out what changes we could make that would allow her to live more comfortably in her home while preserving the character attributes that were most meaningful to her.” Lyon likes solving puzzles and equations, which each project creates, such as blending old with new. His management style is to control the process and end result while giving employees and trade contractors freedom to use their creativity and experiences. “I am very particular about customer experience guidelines and big picture goals,” says Lyon. “But I want our workers to feel good about how they are contributing.”
Lyon is a Kansas City, Missouri native.

He is a 1986 graduate of Colorado State University where he earned a degree in science and mathematics. He holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His professional certifications include NARI Certified Remodeler; Registered Environmental Professional, State of Oregon; and Registered Asbestos Abatement Project Contractor/Supervisor, EPA.

Lyon is married to his high-school sweetheart, Robin, with whom he reconnected in the late 1990s after a circuitous journey post-college that included work in Portland and a yearlong travel adventure to Europe and Africa where he climbed Kilimanjaro, camped in the bush, rafted the Zambezi and hitchhiked through villages and cities. Clay and Robin live in Mission Hills, Kansas with their son and two pets. Clay enjoys mountain climbing and spending time with Robin traveling, practicing yoga, discovering new restaurants and, when time permits, remodeling their home.
